If you've never read one of Robert W. Stephens' Murder on Maui detective novels, you should pick one up. You will probably find these books a pleasant surprise.

Stephens has a unique and satisfying writing style. These books are not "hard-boiled" detective stories. They are closer to cozy mysteries, but not quite. The books are written in what might be best described as a conversational style. In other words, reading these books is very much like having a conversation with the lead character, amateur private investigator Edgar Allan "Poe" Rutherford.

At the start of the series, Rutherford visits a childhood friend living on Maui while working through a failed relationship and the loss of his job back on the mainland. During the visit his friend's fiance is murdered and the Maui police decide the friend did it. After Rutherford's friend is arrested and charged with murder, Rutherford mounts his own investigation aimed at clearing his friend's name. That experience piques his interest in private eye work. In addition, he ends up falling for the female Maui detective who investigated the murder and they end up in a relationship. That's how Poe ends up staying on Maui permanently where he continues working as an amateur private investigator.

In Ocean of Guilt, the seventh book in the series, Rutherford gets roped into helping out his sister-in-law, a wedding planner, by serving as the photographer for an extravagant nautical wedding. Poe, an accomplished hobby photographer, is confident he can handle the assignment until he meets head on what turns out to be the wedding party from hell. Two days into the wedding cruise, the bride turns up dead with her throat slashed, putting Poe back into private eye mode. He sifts for clues, and signs of guilt among the spoiled wedding party guests and the fed-up luxury yacht staffers. Just when Poe pegs the unfaithful groom as the probable culprit, the case takes a sharp turn to starboard. Before the wedding party makes port, Poe has one last chance to determine who onboard the yacht fast-tracked the bride's "death do us part."
